Five Years On
Excellent value for the money. The “blue” model was hundreds less than the brown. Don’t know why. The “blue” version is actually more like a seafoam green or teal color. Way better designed and constructed than any typical third world bolt together shade. All the parts are correct, fit, and were clearly labeled. Nothing was missing – indeed – the package includes a few extras of each bolt and fitting. All the bolts torque properly with no fear of stripping or slipping. Nothing dented. Nothing damaged. The packaging (105 lbs) was strong, undamaged and internally solid so nothing moved around. Each type of fitting was individually double packaged so nothing was lost even when a small plastic bag broke. Shipping was quick and accurate for such a large item. The instructions are – for the most part – very clear. It will take a number of hours to carefully build all the beams and poles before putting everything together. The up side is that all the parts can easily be handled by one person until final assembly. It will probably take an extra set of hands to hold up the four legs while the beams are bolted on. Once assembled, it seems strong enough. Time will tell. Installing and removing the cloth panel is time consuming. You probably won’t want to remove it for storage at the end of the season unless you live in a really severe climate. THE ONLY DOWN SIDE to the unit is the latch that does/doesn’t hold the shade open (or maybe doesn’t hold it well enough to suit me). The unit used a couple of clips that are strong, but are very, very hard to use. Your experience might be different. My experience was bad enough that I spend a few hours designing and building a magnetic closure (using a standard 18″ bar magnet from Harbor Freight) that works perfectly and looks like it was part of the kit. Again, maybe your experience will be better – or you may be less picky about how the canvas should open and close. All in all, a great product for the price – especially the $419 version.Update 5 years on in the Alabama sun: We are in the fifth year with this product. Last summer it was obvious that the cloth canopy was reaching the end of its life – so we ordered a replacement – great that the new one was in stock. Installed this winter. Very impressed that all of the hardware still works perfectly – no corrosion since everything is stainless steel. No obvious corrosion anywhere on the structure and everything is still strong and tight. Mine is securely screwed to the second floor of a deck and does have some lateral metal supports which I added when first installed – but still – this is a great product for the money. If the quality is the same in 2025 as it was in mine in 2020 – you won’t be disappointed.

Good for the price
Finished installing took about four hours two people sometimes three people to help. No missing parts. Couple of damage parts as seen in the photos. Canopy can probably use some drainage holes for rain. The overall unit is Not very sturdy, but I did use anchor bolts at the bottom. The company recommended 3/8 3 inch anchor bolts for the cement. It does come with anchor bolts, but they didn’t look very sturdy. Not gonna worry too much about the damage parts cause I don’t think I’m gonna take it apart. One A-frame was damaged and a B1 was damaged. Not too noticeable so I’m gonna leave it as is. I will see how it holds up to Florida weather. One more thing, the strap that attaches to the canopy to be able to string, it out should be slightly longer or better design, so that short of people can reach it and tighten it without using a ladder.

Better than I expected; instructions could be improved
I was pleasantly surprised by the first and finish of this pergola. Everything went together well, and there were plenty of extra bolts and bolt covers. I’m an avid DIY-er and it took my about a six hours to put it together solo, including about two hours of re-doing work because I put something together backwards. The instructions could be a lot clearer on a couple of things, but nothing fatal the overall product.I strongly recommend using a drill with a clutch for bolts; set it very light (like 3/20), and when assembling, put all the bolts in loosely, then only tighten once you have them all in. Any decent drill or impact driver will rip the threads out of the bolt or nut or both, and you do not need to over-tighten. I used my DeWalt drill with the clutch at 3, and then went back over everything with an allen key by hand once I finished.Have a plan to secure the pergola. The included bolts would be fine for a wood deck; you could use ground anchors it mounting on dirt. Right now, mine is sitting on vinyl planters filled with concrete, in which I sank 1/4-20 threaded rod; each planter is ~50lb, and even in a good wind, it is stable. YMMV.
